Our Story
In the spring of 1977, Ray Olien, choir director at Richland Center High School (Richland Center, WI) decided to put together a group of four young men to compete in a local solo and ensemble contest. The original group consisted of Jerry Kintz (lead), Don Wallace (base), Mark Pauls (baritone), and Doug Rohn (tenor). This newly assembled and musically talented group did so well at contest that they were asked to sing for a family wedding, which was accompanied by Doug Rohn's grandmother, Mrs.Violet Powell. During the fall of 1977, country music songwriter and actress Dale Evans (wife of Roy Rogers) was touring in the Midwest, and the group of four were asked to sing as Ms. Evan's "warm up act" as she toured and performed in the area. Soon after, the demand for this up and coming new gospel group grew as area churches and venues wanted to hear more of their rich harmony and peppy brand of gospel music. Recognizing their potential, Mrs. Violet Powell agreed to be the accompanist of the group and in the winter of 1977, the group decided to name themselves, the Unity Quartet. For several years, the quartet remained very busy, singing gospel music at various churches and concerts. As the years passed, some of the original members decided to leave while other new talent joined, including Peter Beeman, Mark Glassbrenner, Rick Keller, and Chuck Tyl. In 1982, they competed in the "Top Talent of the 80's" sponsored by the American Country Music Association and placed first. Also in 1982, the quartet produced a vinyl record featuring its many gospel songs and sold the album at appearances throughout Wisconsin and Iowa.
In 1987, the quartet performed a special 10th anniversary concert at the Richland Campus Coppertop Theater (Richland Center, WI) featuring Don Wallace and Rick Keller. Then in 1988, the members of the Unity Quartet decided to retire from singing to commit more time to their growing their families and their careers. However, on October 26, 2013, the original members of the group (Jerry Kintz, Don Wallace, Mark Pauls, Doug Rohn) reunited for a special fundraising concert held at the Richland Center High School Auditorium. This concert also featured Eternity, a popular southern gospel quartet from Milwaukee, WI as well as the Brothers in Christ Quartet from Richland Center, WI. Due to the huge success of this concert as well as the popular demand for the quartet and it's music, it was decided to keep the legacy alive. In October 2017, Jerry Kintz, Don Wallace, Chuck Tyl, and David Harper met with accompanist Brian Moore, and formed the Unity Quartet as it exists today. The quartet continues to perform concerts for churches throughout Wisconsin, area nursing homes, and other venues proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ through music. To God be the glory!
